Bulldogs rally from two-goal deficit

Box Score
DULUTH, Minn.-- Just as UND had done in its last two games, 11th-ranked Minnesota Duluth rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 7-4 win Friday evening at AmsOil Arena in National Collegiate Hockey Conference action. The loss was just UND's second in league play and snapped an eight-game unbeaten streak. UMD trailed 3-1 midway through the game, but got a short-handed goal to spark a run with six of the next seven goals.

Westin Michaud, from nearby Cloquet, Minn., welcomed himself home with a fantastic individual effort for North Dakota's first goal. Judd Caulfield raced up the near wall and flicked it to Michaud, who had two defenders draped on him entering the zone. He weaved his way through the defense, poked the puck into free space and collected to snipe one past Hunter Shepard for his 11th goal of the season.

Minnesota Duluth (13-8-2, 8-3-2-0) took little time to answer, however, as just 31 seconds later Kobe Roth scored on a goal that went to a lengthy video review of a potential goaltender interference before before called good.

That's where the first period ended. A wild second period would follow that the teams combine for five goals. North Dakota (18-3-3, 9-2-2-2 NCHC) got the first two for a seemingly comfortable 3-1 advantage.

Junior Hobey Baker Award candidate Jordan Kawaguchi had a beautiful one-timer on the power play put them up, 2-1, followed by a Matt Kiersted point shot that found its way through multiple bodies.

UMD struck back for three straight goals, however, to claim the advantage before intermission. The first came midway through the period on a short-handed tally, then four minutes later a power-play goal to tie it. With 49 seconds left, Nick Swaney shelfed one to give the Bulldogs their first lead and it was 3-2 at the second break.

In the third, the Bulldogs wrapped three more goals around a Jasper Weatherby power-play tally to take the 7-4 win.

The teams wrap their only season series Saturday with a 7:07 p.m. start on MidcoSN, the Home of Economy Fighting Hawks Sports Radio Network and nchc.tv.

Notes: Jordan Kawaguchi (G, A) now has an active eight game point streak with 15 points in that span... Matt Kiersted (G, A) has 11 points in his last eight games, including seven in the last three ... North Dakota suffered just its second conference loss of the season, inching second-place within five points of the league lead.
