Box Score MADISON, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team opened up the 2020 portion of its schedule with a tough, 5-2 defeat to Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon from Madison.
UND (0-1) saw its newcomers rack up the victories and the points for the green and white, with a pair of transfers and a rookie collecting their first wins in a UND uniform.
In doubles action, Northern Illinois (2-1) took a 1-0 lead with a pair of 7-6 victories on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts; however, UND didn't make it easy on the Huskies, with
Edmond Aynedjian and
Jake Kuhlman notching a 7-5 win on the middle court.
The Hawks evened the match at one apiece when freshman Andy Petrovic swept his opponent, 6-1, 6-3, from the top court for his first collegiate win. Northern Illinois responded with four sweeps of its own on the No. 2, 3, 4, and 6 courts to claim the match.
Jonathan Perot also took home his first victory since joining North Dakota with a three-set win on the fifth court. The junior transfer from Alcorn State captured a 6-4 win the first set before falling by a 6-3 score in the second to force a tiebreaker. There, Perot rolled to a 10-6 triumph to earn the second point for the Hawks.
North Dakota returns to action tomorrow morning with a showdown against Wisconsin from Madison.
