SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The University of North Dakota softball team dropped a pair of contests on Saturday in the second day of action of the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, Calif.
UND (4-9) opened the day with an 8-0 defeat to Colorado State before the host-Spartans defeated the Fighting Hawks, 12-4, in five innings to close out the day's action.
Colorado State 8, North Dakota 0
The Rams exploded for seven runs over the fifth and seventh innings blow open the contest and collect an 8-0 win over UND.
Jannay Jones was saddled with the loss, tossing 4.1 innings of work with five hits and four runs (one earned).
Lexi Flom finished out the game for the green and white, but struggled over 2.2 frames as the sophomore surrendered four runs and six hits.
North Dakota's offense couldn't get much going on the CSU pitching staff, picking up only four hits and striking out seven times.
After the Rams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, UND put together a threat in the bottom of the third when a walk and single placed two runners on with only one out; however, a double play ended the threat and kept the deficit at one.
Colorado State took control of the contest with three runs in the top of the fifth before adding four more in the seventh to earn the 8-0 victory.
San Jose State 12, North Dakota 4 (5)
The host-Spartans used big third, fourth, and fifth frames to break open a 4-4 tie and defeat UND, 12-4, in five innings of play on Saturday night from San Jose.
The pitching duo of
Nikki Pica and
Lauren Feld struggled in the circle for the Hawks, combining to allow 15 hits, 12 runs (10 earned), and five walks while striking out two.
UND dug itself an early hole in the nightcap, allowing the Spartans to strike for a tetrad of runs in the bottom of the first to open up a 4-0 lead, but the Hawks responded in the top of the third.
Back-to-back doubles brought the first run of the day home before
Morgan Flann and
Alexys Campos followed with singles to load the bases with only one away. After a wild pitch cut the deficit to 4-2,
Jailene Carpio smacked a ball through the right side for an RBI single and a 4-3 deficit. Moments later,
Angel Love scored Campos on a fielder's choice and tied the game up at four.
San Jose State wasted no time jumping back into the lead, however, plating a pair of runs in the bottom half of the innings before following with three tallies in both the fourth and the fifth to close out a 12-4 win.
North Dakota returns to Santa Clara for the final day of the Silicon Valley Classic on Sunday for a showdown with the host-Broncos at 1:30 p.m.
