North Dakota adds pair of transfers to bolster 2020-21 roster

Seybian Sims and Mitchell Sueker join Fighting Hawks for upcoming season

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head men's basketball coach Paul Sather announced on Thursday the addition of a pair of transfers, Seybian Sims and Mitchell Sueker, to the roster for the 2020-21 season. Both additions will be immediately eligible.

Former RMAC Freshman of the Year at South Dakota School of Mines, Sueker put together a strong pair of campaigns for the Hardrockers to help them reach the RMAC Tournament for the first time since joining the Division II ranks. The Marshall, Minn., native started 26 of 30 games, finishing second on the squad with 14.3 points per game and led the team with 5.3 rebounds per game to earn All-RMAC Second Team honors. He reached double figures in 22 contests, including six games with 20-or-more points, while shooting a .480 clip from the field and .367 from three.

Sueker put together some of his best games towards the end of the season, collecting four double-doubles from the end of January through February. His best performance came on the road against the Colorado School of Mines where he dropped a career-high 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting while grabbing 10 rebounds and three assists in a road win.

"Mitchell [Sueker] fills a large void in our front line position," said Sather. "He brings a great combination of size, skill and athleticism with the ability to really stretch the floor with his 3-point shooting. He had a tremendous career at South Dakota School of Mines and proved he could be an impactful player at the college level as face-up forward that can score inside-and-out. Mitchell is also an exceptional student and will be studying Bio-Medical Engineering at the graduate level here at the University of North Dakota."

A hybrid guard-forward combo from Kirkwood Community College, Sims comes to North Dakota after a pair of promising seasons with the Eagles. The Iowa City, Iowa, native started all but three contests over his 64-game career, averaging 6.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per tilt. Last season, Sims ranked fifth on the team with 7.9 points per game and third with 6.0 boards per game to help the Eagles reach the JUCO National Tournament.

Sims reached double figures in four of the final five contests of the season, helping the Eagles rattle off six straight wins, finish as co-champs of the ICCAC conference and claim the No. 1 seed for the regional tournament. In back-to-back victories to help claim the conference crown, Sims connected on 14-of-16 shots, including 5-of-6 from three, to combine for 34 points and 10 rebounds to earn Second Team All-Region honors.

"Seybian [Sims] is a flat-out winner that can make game changing plays on both ends of the court," said Sather. "His combination of size, length and athleticism at 6'7" makes him a versatile defensive player that can guard any position. Offensively, Seybian plays above the rim and can really stretch the floor with his ability to shoot. He's a great fit in our basketball program and the North Dakota community."

North Dakota became only the fifth Summit League school in the history of the league to reach the championship game in two-or-fewer seasons of being a member in 2019-20.
