DEKALB, Ill. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 defeat to Northern Illinois on Saturday from DeKalb, Ill.
The loss hands UND (2-1) its first taste of defeat in 12 matches, last coming on Jan. 26, 2020 to Wisconsin. The 11-match winning streak was the longest in program history and included wins over Eastern Illinois, Chicago State, UIC, Green Bay, Omaha and Oral Roberts.
In doubles action, NIU captured wins on all three courts, but it was the top position that made it tough on the Huskies as the duo of
Lucas Percy and
Cian McDonnell played to a 7-6 defeat to close out the two-man play.
Edmond Aynedjian captured the lone victory for the Fighting Hawks on the No. 5 court, with the foes splitting the first pair of sets with 6-3 scores, but the UND captain exploded for a 6-0 win in the tiebreaker to get the visitors on the board.
McDonnell and Gerald Sullwald each nearly took sets of their opponents as well, with Sullwald dropping each of his games by a 7-6 score on the No. 2 court and McDonnell falling by a 7-5, 7-6 mark at the fourth position.
North Dakota closes out the weekend in DeKalb with an 11 a.m. showdown against Youngstown State.
