VERMILLION, S.D. – Despite both having four shots on goal in the contest, North Dakota fell 1-0 to South Dakota (8-3-2, 3-2-0 Summit) at the First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex on Friday evening.
The lone goal for the Coyotes came in the 43rd minute when Hattie Giblin was dribbling on the right side outside the box and passed to Alexis Mitchell in front of the goal for the score. Prior to the goal, the match was scoreless, even with the Coyotes holding an 11-2 advantage in shots.
After intermission, the Fighting Hawks (3-8-1, 1-3-0 Summit) came out firing and piled up an 11-6 edge in shots in the second half. The best opportunity UND had at tying up the score came in the 71st minute when
Olivia Valdivia had a shot inside the box that appeared to be on target and went past the goalie, but ended up drifting to the outside of the right post.
Both teams finished the game with four shots on frame and the Coyotes out-shot the Fighting Hawks by a 17-13 margin. USD attempted 12 set pieces, compared to UND having two corner kicks. South Dakota finished with a 4-3 edge in saves.
Mara Yapello led the Hawk attack with three shots, trailed by Valdivia,
Bailey McNitt,
Hannah Olson,
Lexi Miller and
Mary Gasaway all with two shots apiece. Yapello, Gasaway, Miller and Olson each finished the night with one shot on frame.
Madi Livingston was in net the entire night and had three saves. Gasaway, Miller,
Taylor Lange,
Julia Briggs,
Allison Tschetter and
Alisha Maake joined Livingston on the pitch the entire 90 minutes.
North Dakota will now turn its attention to South Dakota State. The Fighting Hawks and Jackrabbits are set for a 1 p.m. kick-off in Brookings on Sunday.
