North Dakota Falls Short in Season Finale

MACOMB, Ill. – Despite scoring two goals in less than eight minutes in the second half, North Dakota (3-13-1, 1-8-0 Summit) fell in its season finale, 4-2 to Western Illinois (11-6-1, 5-4-0 Summit) in women's soccer action at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Leathernecks struck first in the 20th minute and neither team was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the opening half. In the first 45 minutes, Western Illinois piled up a 13-6 shot advantage, while North Dakota held a 6-4 edge in saves.

After the break, WIU increased its lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 49th minute and added another in the 62nd minute. After that point, North Dakota became more aggressive offensively and found the back of the net in the 64th minute when Bailey McNitt sent a ball to Hannah Olson, who put it in the back of the net to cut the Leatherneck lead to 3-1.

Less than eight minutes later, Olson buried another shot, this time with an assist from Lexi Miller to trim the lead down to 3-2 with just over 18 minutes left in the contest. Western Illinois put the game just out of reach in the 80th minute when it scored for the fourth time the afternoon and then held on for the 4-2 victory.

WIU won the statistical category of both shots and shots on goal by margins of 33-15 and 17-9, respectively. The Leathernecks also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, while the Fighting Hawks racked up a 13-7 advantage in saves.

Olson was the most accurate Hawk with four shots and all of them on frame. Allison Rapaduski attempted the next-most shots with three (two on goal), while McNitt attempted three shots (one on frame). Mara Yapello also attempted two shots on goal. Miller and Preston rounded out the UND attack with two shots and one shot, respectively.

Abby Ellenberger started at keeper and was in the entire match, recording 13 saves while allowing four goals. Olson, Rapaduski, Miller, Julia Briggs, JoJo Prisock and Allison Tschetter were all on the pitch for the entire 90-minute match.
