Box Score MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The University of North Dakota fell on the road against Marquette 89-65 on Saturday evening.
Kacie Borowicz ended the game as the offensive leader for the Fighting Hawks. She finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
Maggie Manson,
Olivia Lane, and
Claire Orth ended the night in double digits for UND. Manson and Lane had 11 points each while Orth followed with 10 points. Lane led on the boards with six rebounds.
North Dakota finished shooting 35.9 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the three and 82.4 percent from the free throw line. Comparatively, Marquette shot 58.0 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from the three and 50.0 percent from the line.
Although the Golden Eagles held the lead during the contest, the Hawks ended the match with a lead in points off turnovers (12-11). UND and Marquette tied on second chance points (13-13). Marquette maintained the lead in fast break points (21-8), points in the paint (42-22), and points off the bench (26-14).
Marquette was the first on the board in the contest, but the Fighting Hawks responded quickly with a jumper from Lane. After almost a minute of no scoring from either team, the Golden Eagles took the lead with a jumper from Lauren Van Kleunen. In the middle of the quarter, UND suffered a dry spell, which allowed Marquette to take a 7-0 lead before Orth put four points on the board to bring the Hawks within six with 5:18 left to play. Yet, the Golden Eagles defense would only give up two more points in the first quarter to leave UND trailing 12-29 before the second quarter.
In the second, Marquette was the first on the board, but Manson responded with a three for the Fighting Hawks to give them some momentum.
Melissa Leet would score a layup to put UND on a 4-0 run. The Golden Eagles would stop the run and go on a 4-0 run of their own before North Dakota would score again. For the rest of the quarter, it would be a back-and-forth battle, but Marquette would keep the lead heading into halftime, 51-29.
After the half, UND would be the first to score, but Marquette responded on offense and placed pressure on defense to go on a 10-0 run. The Fighting Hawks would put a stop to the run with a layup from
Kacie Borowicz, but they would struggle against pressure and would score 13 points in the third compared to 25 points by the Golden Eagles.
Heading into the fourth, Borowicz would lead the charge by scoring the first six points for the Hawks in the quarter. Manson would add another three midway through, but Marquette's offense would continue to respond. At the end of the quarter, Lane had added six points as well to help the Hawks win the fourth, 23-13. Although they won the fourth quarter, UND would not be able to surpass the Marquette, who won the match 89-65.
Van Kleunen was the top scorer for the Golden Eagles. She ended the afternoon with 20 points and five rebounds. Their leader on the boards was Chloe Marotta with 12 rebounds.
"First off, credit to Marquette. They shot exceptionally well, and we did not convert on good looks to match them early," said head coach
Mallory Bernhard. "We're much more capable than that but not tonight unfortunately. Now we have to analyze and make corrections. There are many we have to make, but the good thing is that we have a team that will learn from this and respond."
The Fighting Hawks will return to Grand Forks on Wednesday, Dec. 15 to play Mayville State. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
