COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-- The University of North Dakota took four four major awards Wednesday as the National Collegiate Hockey Conference unveiled a handful of its individual year-end awards. Sophomore
Shane Pinto earned both the forward of the year and the defensive forward of the year while
Jacob Bernard-Docker was dubbed the defensive defenseman of the year and junior
Adam Scheel took home the goalie of the year in the league. The NCHC Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year are still to be announced as the conference will release those on Thursday.
Pinto is piecing together a sophomore season that is drawing eyes nationally. The Franklin Square, N.Y., native took the NCHC scoring title with his 15 goals and 28 points in the regular season as he's helped North Dakota to back-to-back league championships in his two seasons on campus. He also paces the league in power play goals (7), faceoff winning percentage (.620), multi-point games (11) and multi-goal games (4). His 200-foot game has helped North Dakota lead the conference in both goals per game (3.92) and fewest goals allowed per game (1.96).Â
Bernard-Docker is part of a blueline that has posted four shutouts and six other games with just one goal allowed this season. He is tied with Pinto for second in the conference in plus/minus rating at +15 and he's chipped in 31 blocked shots for the Fighting Hawks. The fellow Ottawa Senators prospect from Canmore, Alberta has a pair of goals and 13 assists this season.Â
Scheel is a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the top NCAA Division I goaltender in the nation. The junior form Lakewood, Ohio led the NCHC in wins (16), goals against average (1.80) and shutouts (4) this season. He is the reigning back-to-back winner of the league's goalie of the month after posting February numbers that saw him go 4-0-0 with a 1.01 GAA and a .960 save percentage. He becomes the second UND player to win the award after Zane McIntyre did so in 2014-15, on his way to winning the Richter Award.
North Dakota preps for the NCHC Tournament this weekend, hosting all eight teams at Ralph Engelstad Arena starting Friday. Top-seeded UND draws eighth-seed Miami in a 7:37 p.m. quarterfinal with the semifinals Monday and a Tuesday championship.Â
