NEW ORLEANS -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision on Wednesday to New Orleans to see its five-game match winning streak come to an end to kick-off a three-match road swing during Spring Break.
UND (8-3) won two singles matches, but could not complete the comeback against one of the top teams in the Southland Conference.
In doubles action, UNO jumped out to a 1-0 lead with victories on the second and third courts. The duo of
Cian McDonnell and
Gerhard Sullwald kept their hot streak going with a 7-6 win at the top position, but a pair of close losses on the other courts gave the Privateers a 1-0 advantage after two-man play.
New Orleans built a 2-0 lead before McDonnell, the reigning Summit League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, notched a 6-0, 7-5 triumph on the No. 3 court to get the visitors on the board and chip the deficit down to 2-1. Moments later, Sullwald evened the score at two with a 6-4, 6-3 win at the second position to start the match anew.
The Privateers answered back with back-to-back wins on the No. 5 and No. 1 courts, including a three-set battle at the top position, to give the hosts a 4-2 win.
Lucas Percy was leading in his match on the sixth court when play was halted upon the clinching point.
North Dakota returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Nicholls at 2 p.m.
