THIBODAUX, La. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Thursday with a 5-2 victory over Nicholls State in Thibodaux.
UND (9-3), which saw its five-match winning streak come to an end yesterday, bounced back with a strong performance against the Colonels (4-4) with a pair of wins on the doubles courts to go alongside four victories in singles play to earn the triumph.
Cian McDonnell and
Gerhard Sullwald got the action started with a 6-1 drubbing on the top court before Nicholls answered with a win at the bottom position to even two-man play up at one apiece.
Johnatan Parat and
Lucas Percy sealed the early point for the visitors with a 6-4 score on the middle court to give UND a 1-0 lead.
After a win by the Colonels at the No. 6 position, UND rattled off four straight singles victories to take the match and the victory outright. Percy had it rolling with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at the fifth position before Sullwald made it six wins in his last seven singles matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win on the top court to push the advantage to 3-1 in favor of the Fighting Hawks.
McDonnell, the current Summit League Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, kept it rolling with his seventh straight win by a 7-5, 6-2 score to seal the victory for the visitors.
Edmond Aynedjian capped off the strong performance with a 6-3, 6-4 win on the fourth court to cement the 5-2 win.
North Dakota caps off the road trip on Saturday afternoon at Southern Mississippi at 2 p.m.
