Eleven Fighting Hawks claim NCHC All-Academic Team honors

Six UND players named Distinguished Scholar-Athletes for 3.5 GPAs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of North Dakota produced 11 of the 118 student-athletes appearing on the National Collegiate Hockey Conference's Academic All-Conference Team, announced Thursday by league officials. Additionally, six of those UND athletes also earned special recognition as NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, an accolade for those players that have achieved a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher.

To be eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must compile a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average or better while having completed at least one academic year at his current institution. Student-athletes that have accrued a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better are honored as NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, in addition to Academic All-Conference.

While freshmen and first-year transfers are not currently eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team or Distinguished Scholar-Athlete recognition, those freshmen and transfers that achieve a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year, will be added to the Academic All-Conference Team by the NCHC over the summer. Similarly, any freshmen or transfers who compile a 3.5 GPA or better will be named an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.

The 2020-21 NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, chosen from senior Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, will be announced as part of several individual NCHC awards on Thursday, March 11. NCHC All-Conference and All-Rookie Teams will be revealed on Monday, March 8, with individual NCHC awards announced throughout the rest of the week (March 9-11).

All six of UND's Distinguished Scholar-Athletes are multi-year winners led by senior Josh Rieger, who has been honored all four years. Jacob Bernard-Docker is a three-time honoree while Carson Albrecht, Judd Caulfield, Ethan Frisch and Shane Pinto are two-time winners.

Senior Peter Thome picked up his fourth consecutive NCHC Academic All-Conference award while Gavin Hain, Mark Senden and Jasper Weatherby are all three-time honorees with Harrison Blaisdell claiming his second award.
