Kansas City storms back for 4-3 win in Summit League semifinals

DENVER -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Kansas City on Friday night in the Summit League Tennis Championships Semifinals from Denver.

UND closes the season with a 9-10 record and 4-2 mark in conference play, advancing to the postseason for the second time as a member of the Summit League since 2018-19. The Fighting Hawks also dropped both contests to the Roos this season by a 4-3 score after defeating KC by the same mark in 2020.

North Dakota jumped out to the start it wanted in doubles play, when Sapir Sela and Andrea Jansson started it off with a 6-2 win on the top court before Allie Ochotorena and Nina Zdravkovic sealed the 1-0 lead with a 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position. UND was on pace to make it a clean sweep in two-person play, as Isa Sullivan and Kaede Amano leading by a 4-3 score when play was stopped.

Kansas City rallied back to grab a 2-1 lead with a pair of triumphs on the top two courts, but it was UND who answered right back to take the lead. Jansson, who was named to the all-conference team yesterday, rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win at the third position to even the score and Zdravkovic putting the Hawks right back in front with a victory by a pair of 6-4 scores on the No. 5 court.

All eyes turned to the No. 4 and 6 courts, where both were locked in three-set battles after UND claimed the opening frame and KC answered back in the second stanza. The Roos claimed both courts and the overall match to advance to the final on Saturday.
