GRAND FORKS, N.D.-- Junior track and field thrower
Destinee Rose-Haas and sophomore hockey forward Shane Pinto took top honors during UND's Night of Champions week-long virtual event completed Friday. Rose-Haas was voted the Grace Rhonemus UND Female Athlete of the Year while Pinto claimed Glenn "Red" Jarrett UND Male Athlete of the Year honors.
Â
Rose-Haas is looking to put the finishing touches on a standout junior season. With the Summit League Outdoor meet still on the docket, Rose-Haas has already shattered the school record in the discus, eclipsing the 180-foot mark with a heave of 181'9". She is also second in the record books in the weight throw and currently ranks seventh in the hammer throw on the precipice of the league outdoor champions.
Â
She finished the indoor season ranked 18th in the country and was the runner up at the conference indoor meet in the weight throw.
Â
Pinto, who has already made his NHL debut with the Ottawa Senators since UND's season was completed, pieced together another standout year as a sophomore. He was a Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalist and the first-ever unanimous selection as the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Player of the Year.
Â
The accolades didn't stop there as the Franklin Square, N.Y., native was the NCHC Forward of the Year, Defensive Forward of the Year and was a First Team All-American selection by multiple organizations. He won the NCHC's regular-season scoring title and finished the year with 32 points on 15 goals and 17 assists.
Â
Pinto led UND to back-to-back NCHC regular-season titles and a Frozen Faceoff championship this past season and a return to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The pair join a host of other award winners for the season-end celebration that is normally a formal event, but went virtual again this year due to the pandemic.
