Logan, UT – North Dakota Volleyball opened up the season splitting a pair matches against foes from the Mountain West Conference and the Big East Conference in the Northern Utah Invitational on Friday.
Utah State 3, North Dakota 1
The Hawks fell 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 20-25, 9-25) to host Utah State.
Lexi Ahrens recorded eight kills while
Kelly Wahl posted six kills on 14 swings with only one hitting error to hit .357 for the match.
The Hawks were victorious in the second set 25-23, limiting the Aggies to a team hitting percentage of .067.
Darian Chwailkowski led North Dakota with 16 digs, closely followed by
Maddy Hornyak with 13.
North Dakota 3, Seton Hall 1
In the night cap, North Dakota defeated Seton Hall 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18) using a point run of seven consecutive serves from Chwailkowski which fueled a rally for a 25-21 opening set win. Ahrens tallied five first set kills as the Hawks hit .263 while holding the Pirates to .139.
In the second set, despite recording one more kill than the first set and out blocking Seton Hall 2-0, the Hawks fell 25-22.
The Hawks got a strong third set performance from Wahl to win the third 25-18. After three sets, Wahl was 10 for 19 with only one error for a hitting percentage of .474. As a team, North Dakota held Seton Hall to a .000 hitting percentage in the third.
In the fourth, North Dakota built a lead and never relinquished it cruising to a 25-18 victory to close the day with a 1-1 record.
One of the differences in the match was at the service line. The Hawks totaled nine aces to the Pirates' three.
Ahrens and Wahl finish in double figure kill totals with 15 and 11 respectively. North Dakota outblocked Seton Hall 11-7.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow at Weber State.
