Pair of late goals doom Fighting Hawks in 2-0 defeat

UND returns to the pitch to face Northern State on Tuesday

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- A brace from Sara Wendt in the final four minutes of the match helped Bemidji State propel past North Dakota, 2-0, in soccer on Friday afternoon at Bronson Field.

On a humid day in Grand Forks, both sides went over 86 minutes without a goal, but a header following a corner kick in the 87th minute and a tally against the run of play in the 89th frame gave the Beavers (1-0-0) their fourth straight win over the Fighting Hawks (1-2-0).

North Dakota controlled the possession battle, 51-49, including holding just under 40 percent in the attacking third, but could only muster three shots on target of its 12 taken. The Beavers led the contest with 21 total shots, with goalkeeper Madi Livingston making seven saves on nine shots on goal.

UND controlled the early push of play, earning a pair of corners through the first two minutes of action. Irene Jiraseijinda sent both balls into dangerous areas, but could not fall to anyone in a white shirt to produce a scoring chance.

Bailey McNitt fired the first shot on frame in the game in the 12th minute, rocketing a ball to the lower right corner that was snuffed out by Alyssa Stumbaugh to keep the game scoreless. The green and white kept attacking through the opening portion of the contest, missing the target on a few shots and forcing the Beavers' backline to play deep with an aggressive attack.

Livingston and the UND defense came up with some big plays down the final few ticks for the opening half, thwarting a pair of BSU corners and a trio of shots to send both teams into the locker room knotted at 0-0.

It was more of the same to start the second stanza, with McNitt again providing a chance by striking a ball just over the crossbar from the left attacking side that nearly gave UND a 1-0 lead just a minute into play.

Both teams traded chances as the game seemed destined for overtime, but a flurry of BSU chances led to the ice breaker. Following a shot off the post and a rebound save by Livingston that earned the Beavers a corner, Megan Carlson sent a ball into the box that found the head of Wendt who placed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 87th minute.

UND didn't seem rattled by the late goal, immediately earning a corner and looking to even up the tilt; however, a second strike against the run of play by Wendt in the 89th frame allowed the Beavers to seal the 2-0 victory in the dying seconds.

North Dakota returns to action on Tuesday afternoon for a showdown against Northern State at 4 p.m. from Bronson Field.
