MADISON, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Wisconsin on Friday night from Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. in the opening match of the championship portion of the 2021-22 season.
UND (0-1) picked up a pair of singles wins and a brought a third match to a tiebreaker frame, but ultimately fell short against a Big Ten foe.
A pair of newcomers,
Dylan Leeman and
Riley Odell put up a strong match on the No. 3 court during doubles play, deadlocked at 5-5 when play was halted following the Badgers (1-0) gaining the 1-0 lead with wins on the other courts.
In singles action,
Nikita Snezhko showed his familiarity with the Big Ten opponent with a 6-4, 6-2 victory on the No. 5 court to give the former Iowa standout his first win as a Fighting Hawk. Leeman kept his strong collegiate debut going, picking a three-set victory by a 7-5, 4-6, 10-3 score at the sixth position. Odell pushed his match to three sets at the fourth spot, but fell short to give the Badgers the 5-2 victory.
North Dakota jumps right back to action tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. showdown against DePaul.
