Ulseth's Pentathlon Highlights Record-Setting Day at UND Open

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Elise Ulseth broke the North Dakota school record in the pentathlon, highlighting a record-setting day inside the Pollard Athletic Center on Friday evening.

Ulseth became the first Fighting Hawk in school history to eclipse 4,000 points in the pentathlon, finishing the night with 4,029 points and breaking the school record by a total of 398. Ulseth's point total currently ranks ninth nationally.

The Kristiansund, Norway, native won four of the five events in the pentathlon, also breaking the school record in the long jump in the process with a leap of 19-3 1/4 (5.87m).

Along with Ulseth's records, she also put together the No. 2 time in program history in the 60-meter hurdles in the opening event with a time of 8.64. Her jump of 5-8 (1.73m) in the high jump was also good for a personal-best and tied for the third-best jump in school history.

Erica Benson was the runner-up in the pentathlon with 3,472 points. She won the pentathlon shot put with a PR throw of 36-1 1/2 (11.01m), while claiming second in both the pentathlon 800 and high jump.

Malene Kollberg, competing unattached, finished third with 3,430 points. Her point total would have been good for the No. 5 pentathlon point total in school history.

Elle Thorson took fourth in the pentathlon with a point total of 3,292, good to rank No. 5 all-time at UND in the event. On her way to the new UND all-time top-10 mark, Thorson recorded new personal-bests in four of the five events.

Brooklynn Gould was the final Hawk to compete in the pentathlon and placed sixth with 3,180 points.

After four heptathlon events, Trenton Hanseder currently sits fourth with 2,377 points. He had third place finishes in the heptathlon long jump and shot put.

Garrett Shumski claimed the men's discus title with a throw of 141-11 (43.26m), while Kenna Curry took the women's discus crown with a toss of 159-2 (48.52m). Natalie Mohring was the runner-up in the women's discus with a throw of 152-9 (46.57m).

The two-day UND Open will commence on Saturday with the final heptathlon events starting at 10:15 a.m., while the field events will begin at Noon and track events at 2 p.m. Live results will continue to be available at HerosTiming.com, with Saturday's portion of track and field events streamed at hbconnects.com/undtrack, with camera angles available from the track, high jump, long jump, throws and pole vault areas.
