DENVER, Colo. – North Dakota volleyball lost 3-2 in a tight match with Denver on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Hawks were prepared for a battle as they began the second set trading points with the Pioneers. Denver pulled away from North Dakota as they took a 20-14 lead, but UND was able to rally as they went on four-point run to make it 20-18. The Fighting Hawks were not going to give up easily as they took the 23-22 lead. The tussle continued as the first set went into extra points. UND came out on top as they beat DU 31-29. The Pioneers came out ready to attack the Fighting Hawks as they took an extensive 15-8 lead before UND called a timeout. North Dakota continued to fight to cut the deficit down, but Denver took the second set 25-12.
After a tough second set, the Fighting Hawks came out ready as they took a 13-9 lead. DU was not surrendering easily as they took the lead from UND at 17-16. North Dakota did not allow them to take off with the lead as they kept it close and pushed the third set into extra points. Both teams once again faced set-point after set-point until the Fighting Hawks capitalized one an attempt and took the set 29-27. North Dakota struggled early in the fourth set as Denver took a 15-4 lead. The Fighting Hawks were unable to catch up to the Pioneers as they fell in the fourth set 25-16. The fifth set was a tight fight as the teams traded points early on. Denver took an 13-10 lead to force North Dakota to take a timeout. The Fighting Hawks attacked the Pioneers as they brought it within one (13-12), but the Pioneers were not letting go of the lead as they won the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
North Dakota tried to keep up statistically with Denver, but DU took the lead in all categories. The Fighting Hawks had 68 points to the Pioneers 99. UND had 57 kills, four aces, seven blocks, 51 assists and 55 digs compared to DU's 73 kills, 12 aces, 14 blocks, 67 assists and 71 digs.
The Fighting Hawks continue return to Grand Forks to host St. Thomas at the Betty Sioux Engelstad Center on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. (CT).
Postgame Notes
- North Dakota is now 8-11 on the season and 5-3 in the Summit League.
- Denver has the all-time lead in the series 8-1.
- Ashlyn Olson led the Fighting Hawks with 16.5 points on the afternoon. She had 15 kills, three blocks and one dig.
- Marissa Stockman ended the afternoon with 13 kills, four blocks and one dig to earn 15 points.
- Sitting at 11 points to end the match was Sierra Ward. She had ten kills, two digs, two blocks and one assist.
- Leading the team in assists with 31 was Elizabeth Norris. She finished with nine digs, six kills and two blocks to earn eight points.
- Leading the way defensively was Maddy Hornyak with 15 digs. On offense, she had five kills.
- Kortney Carney had two service aces to lead the team. She ended the afternoon with 12 digs.
- The remaining points came from Paige Barber, Sophia Ortquist and Maddie Lipetzky who are all true freshmen. Lipetzky had four kills while Barber and Ortquist had two each.
