North Dakota Sweeps Western Illinois, 3-0

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota swept Western Illinois 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-17) inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon.

Elizabeth Norris led all players with a game-high 11 kills, while dishing out 14 assists and adding 10 digs for a triple-double. Maddie Lipetzky was the next most productive attacker with eight K's, followed by Sierra Ward with seven terminating attacks.

Peyton Sewell quarterbacked the offense and had a team-high 22 assists to go with five digs and three kills.

Maddy Hornyak paced the team defensively with 19 digs. Kortney Carney also added 10 digs. Marissa Stockman had five blocking assists, trailed by Ashlyn Olson with four.

Hornyak recorded a game-high two service aces, while Norris and Lipetzky each had one ace apiece.

As a team, North Dakota held the advantage in all major statistical categories. The Fighting Hawks recorded a 45-22 advantage in kills and a 4-3 edge in service aces. UND also out-blocked WIU 7-3, while also winning the battle in assists (42-20) and digs (72-62).

In set one, North Dakota trailed 15-10 early before taking the lead at 16-10, highlighted by two kills from Norris. Later in the set, UND went up 20-17 with a Lipetzky service ace and a Norris kill. The Fighting Hawks would score the last four points of the set to take set one, 25-19.

UND held a 12-7 advantage early in set two and then went on a 7-0 run to bolster its lead to 19-7. During that run, Hornyak had both her service aces. A late rally by the Leathernecks trimmed the deficit to 23-16 but North Dakota took set two, two points later following a Lipetzky kill and a WIU setting error.

The Fighting Hawks held a 12-11 edge midway through set three before going on a 4-0 run to go up 16-11. The Leathernecks would get within five at 20-15, but kills from Stockman, Olson and Ward put the Hawks up 23-15 moments later. Lipetzky ended the set and the match four points later with a kill, giving UND set three by a tally of 25-17.

  • North Dakota improved to 10-11 (7-3 Summit League), while Western Illinois dropped to 4-19 (0-11 Summit League) this season.
  • It was the fifth sweep of the season for North Dakota, the most the Fighting Hawks have had since recording five 3-0 victories in 2018.
