GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 15-8) contest to league-leading South Dakota on Tuesday evening from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
UND (12-12, 9-4 Summit League) sees its winning streak come to an end at four straight, but the Fighting Hawks have still won seven of their last 10 matches heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Kortney Carney, who was named the league's top defensive player for the week earlier today, showed why on Tuesday night with a career-high 33 digs to go alongside a trio of assists. Maddy Hornyak was second on the team with 14 digs while pacing the team with four of the team's seven service aces.
Elizabeth Norris picked up fifth triple-double of the season with 13 kills, 30 assists and 13 digs to move into a tie for second in the nation for the stat. The junior remains the only player in the Summit League to have recorded a triple-double this season.
Sierra Ward had her best day in a North Dakota uniform with 17 kills to pace the hosts while Norris (13) and Paige Barber (10) each notched double-digit kills.
North Dakota jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a 26-24 victory in the first set, but South Dakota (22-2, 11-1 Summit League) rallied back with a 25-19 win in the second frame followed by a 25-23 triumph in the third set to grab a 2-1 advantage in the match.
UND continued to show fight against the league's top team, rolling to a 25-18 win in the fourth set to force a tiebreaker, the third straight match going the distance for the Hawks. In that fifth set, South Dakota used a scoring run over the middle of the frame to pull away for the 15-8 victory and 3-2 match victory.
North Dakota will remain home to host in-state rival North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. from The Betty. Earlier this season, UND defeated NDSU, 3-2, in Fargo.
