GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Seattle (7-1) hit the game-winner with 0.06 seconds left of overtime and North Dakota fell 80-78 inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Saturday evening.
Elijah Brooks knocked down a triple to knot the game up at 78-78 with 37 seconds left of overtime. Moments later, Tyson Cameron missed a three-pointer and Alex Schumacher came up with the rebound as the teams scrambled for the ball in the final moments. Off the rebound, Schumacher put up a shot from 15-feet out that rattled home to give the Redhawks the 80-78 lead with 0.06 seconds left.
North Dakota (5-7) was able to inbound the ball in the final second but was unable to get a shot off to potentially force a second overtime.
Cameron paced the Redhawks with 24 points and four rebounds. The game-winner was one of the few makes for Schumacher, as he netted six points and grabbed two rebounds in the game.
Brooks poured in a season-high 17 points, including the triple that almost sent the game into double overtime. He also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds and had a block in 33 minutes of play.
Jalun Trent was next in scoring for UND, chipping in 12 points and cleaning the glass with a career-high eight rebounds. Trent made a driving layup and the and-one free throw to even the game up at 70-70 at the end of regulation.
Brady Danielson was the final Fighting Hawk in double figures, adding 11 points and two rebounds.
Treysen Eaglestaff just missed double digits, contributing nine points. He went a perfect 3-for-3 from deep.
North Dakota led by 17 points at intermission but struggled at the charity stripe (15-for-27), which allowed Seattle to claw its way back into the game in the second half. A 14-4 run from the Redhawks coming out of intermission trimmed the deficit to 40-33 with 15:21 left in the game.
With 13:08 left in regulation, Seattle had cut the deficit to four at 42-38, forcing five UND turnovers in the opening moments of the second half.
B.J. Omot put an end to the SU run with an emphatic dunk and an Eaglestaff three-pointer on the next possession pushed the North Dakota lead back to 54-44 with 8:49 left in the game.
Seattle continued chipping away at the deficit and went into the lead at 66-65 with 1:27 left after a Riley Grigsby layup. It marked the first lead for the Redhawks since the 13:44 mark in the first half.
In the final seconds, Seattle had a 69-67 advantage on the scoreboard and headed to the free throw line, but only went 1-for-2. On the next possession, Trent went in for a driving layup and was fouled on the make, burying the and-one free throw to knot the game up at 70-70 with 7.8 seconds left. The Redhawks would have a shot to win the game in regulation but it came up short.
Prior to the second half flurry from Seattle, North Dakota looked to be in control with a 36-19 lead at intermission. The Fighting Hawks erupted for 26 points over the final 11:22 of the first half, while only allowing the Redhawks to score six points over that period. During the UND run, North Dakota went 9-for-14 from the field. Eaglestaff, Trent and
Matt Norman each had six points apiece over the final 11 minutes of the half.
In the opening 20 minutes, North Dakota shot 46.4 percent, knocked down six triples and went 4-for-5 at the line. Seattle made 28.1 percent of its shots (9-for-32), went only 1-for-11 from deep and missed both free throw attempts. The Fighting Hawks held a 24-16 rebounding advantage and outscored the Redhawk bench by an 18-4 margin.
North Dakota will continue its homestand on Monday, battling North Central at 8 p.m. inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. That game is part of another doubleheader, with the Fighting Hawk women squaring off with the Comets of Mayville State at 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed on Midco Sports Plus and carried on the Home of Economy Radio Network.
