Ulseth Shatters Heptathlon School Record, Competition Begins at Three Meets

| By:

North Dakota track and field athletes split up to compete at three different meets on Thursday, as action at the Texas Relays resumed, while competition began at both the Bobcat Invitational and Raleigh Relays.

Elise Ulseth wrapped up her heptathlon at the Texas Relays on Thursday afternoon, setting a new school record in the heptathlon with 5,500 points to finish eighth and become the first Fighting Hawk in school history to amass more than 5,000 points in the event.

Ulseth's point total breaks the previous school record of 4,895 points set by current Fighting Hawk Erica Benson. Benson's heptathlon point total, which is now No. 2 in program history, was set at the 2021 Summit League Outdoor Championships.

Through four heptathlon events on Wednesday, Ulseth had already accumulated 3,187 points, good for the third-best point total in program history. She racked up an additional 2,313 points on Thursday, going 18-9 1/4 (5.72m) in the long jump, 148-4 (45.22m) in the javelin and running an 800-meter time of 2:23.24 to earn the school record. Her javelin throw was the second-best throw in the heptathlon javelin at the Texas Relays.

At the Bobcat Invitational, Brooklynn Gould led the Fighting Hawks with a sixth-place finish in the javelin in a personal-best throw of 125-5 (38.23m). Jennifer Parent also placed in the javelin and was eighth with a mark of 113-11 (34.72m).

Natalie Mohring finished eighth in the discus at the Bobcat Invitational with a throw of 150-2 (45.79m).

Matt Russell (4:02.21) and Alec Nelson (4:02.42) wrapped up day one of the Bobcat Invite with PR's in the 1,500 meters, barely missing the UND top-10 list by less than four seconds.

At that Raleigh Relays, Nelson Ruto kicked off competition for North Dakota and ran a time of 14:32.86 in the 5,000 meters to finish with the third-fastest time in UND history.

Competition continues Friday with North Dakota resuming action at the Texas Relays, Bobcat Invitational and Raleigh Relays. Live results for all meets can be followed on FightingHawks.com.
