Forward tallied three points in Omaha

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Freshman forward Jake Schmaltz was named the NCHC Rookie of the Week on Monday, as announced by league officials following a three-point weekend against No. 20 Omaha to close out the regular season.

The award is the second of the season for Schmaltz, capturing the honors on Oct. 11, and marks the sixth straight week that a North Dakota player has been honored by the league as part of its weekly honors.

The McFarland, Wis., native scored two goals in Friday's win over the Mavericks to help the Fighting Hawks win their league-record third straight Penrose Cup. He opened the scoring before adding a second in the middle frame to extend UND's lead to 4-2 in the eventual 5-4 victory in overtime. It marks the first two-goal game for the rookie since Oct. 9 vs. Niagara.

He added an assist on Judd Caulfield's power play tally in Saturday's contest, giving Schmaltz seven points over his last seven games. He also played key minutes on a penalty kill that finished the weekend 9-for-11.

On the season, Schmaltz leads all UND freshmen in goals (8), assists (14) and points (22) while carrying a plus-8 rating. He is one of only four players to appear in every game during the regular season, joining Nick Portz, Tyler Kleven and Caulfield.

No. 5 North Dakota opens the NCHC quarterfinals as the second seed against Colorado College on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena in the first of a best-of-3 series.
