AZUSA, Calif./LONG BEACH, Calif. – The North Dakota track and field teams split up for two meets on Thursday, with the heptathletes, mid-distance and distance squads competing in the Bryan Clay Invitational and select Fighting Hawks participating at Long Beach State in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
North Dakota showed out in the heptathlon and now have the top-four marks in school history in the event, while
Elise Ulseth also improved two of her own school records.
Ulseth wrapped up the heptathlon on Thursday evening and finished in third place in group one with a personal-best point total of 5,685 and breaking her record of 5,500 points set at the Texas Relays earlier this season. Ulseth's 5,685 points currently ranks No. 7 in the NCAA.
On her way to the heptathlon school record, Ulseth broke her own school record in the long jump with a leap of 20-0 1/4 (6.10m) to finish with the fourth-best leap in her group. That mark makes Ulseth the first Hawk to go over 20-0 in the long jump in school history. Ulseth also recorded the top throw in her javelin section with a distance of 149-5 (45.55m). The Kristiansun, Norway, native rounded out the day with a PR time of 2:17.73 to finish second in the heptathlon 800 meters.
Earlier in the afternoon,
Erica Benson became the second Hawk in program history to eclipse the 5,000-point mark in the heptathlon, finishing ninth in group two with 5,020 points. That point total ranks second in school history in the heptathlon. Benson recorded a PR of 18-5 (5.61m) in the long jump to improve her No. 10 mark in school history at the time. Benson also set a personal-best in the 800 meters in a time of 2:21.79.
Brooklynn Gould competed in group two of the heptathlon and became the third Fighting Hawk to amass more than 5,000 points in school history, finishing 10th with 5,014 points. Gould's point total currently ranks No. 3 in school history in the event. On her way to the personal-best, Gould moved up to No. 4 in program history in the long jump with a leap of 18-9 3/4 (5.73m). Gould also clocked a PR of 2:20.91 in the 800 meters, knocking over four seconds off her previous best.
Elle Thorson was the first UND student-athlete to take the track and placed third in the heptathlon in her group with a personal-best total of 4,610 points, moving her up to No. 4 in school history. Thorson finished the heptathlon with five personal bests in the seven events, starting day two with the second-best long jump leap in her section with a mark of 17-6 (5.33m). Thorson also clocked a personal-best time of 2:36.08 in the 800 meters.
Alec Nelson also posted an improvement to the UND top-10 list at the Bryan Clay Invitational, finishing with a time of 1:52.40 in his section of the 800 meters, good for the No. 5 time in program history.
Jadyn Keeler and
McKenzie Burian were the final Hawks to take the track at the Bryan Clay Invitational and both posted improvements to the UND top-10 list in their respective sections of the 5,000 meters. Keeler clocked a personal-best time of 17:07.24 to move up to No. 4 in school history, while Burian ran a PR time of 17:17.14 to move up to No. 8.
At Long Beach State,
Jennifer Parent led UND with a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 19-0 3/4 (5.81m).
Autumn Stokes joined Parent in the long jump and placed eighth with a personal-best leap of 18-6 1/2 (5.65m). The personal-best mark for Stokes moved her into No. 8 on the UND all-time top-10 chart.
North Dakota will conclude its California trip on Friday with the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational. Competition in Azusa, Calif., will begin with field events at 11 a.m. (CT) and events on the track at 12:15 p.m. (CT). Live results for all meets can be followed on
