ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of North Dakota beat St. Thomas 5-3 on Sunday afternoon to end the series. Two runs in the top of the seventh sealed the victory for the Fighting Hawks.
Freshman
Jackie Albrecht pitched 6.1 frames in the circle. She allowed seven hits and three runs. She stuck out five batters as she earned the win to improve to 5-9 on the season. Jones stepped in for relieve and pitched 0.2 innings. She did not allow a hit or a run and struck out one batter.
Madi Moore stepped up to the plate and singled to the pitcher to start the game. North Dakota was unable to capitalize, but they kept St. Thomas off the board to end the inning scoreless.
Madison Pederson hit a double to center field to start the second inning. She advanced to third on a ground out from
Mariah Peters.
Izzy Haslett stepped up and singled up the middle to bring in Pederson and give UND the 1-0 lead headed into the bottom of the second. The Tommies responded with a run of their own to make it a 1-1 game.
North Dakota retook the lead at the top of the third as Moore singled once again.
Lauren Feld tripled down the right field line to earn the RBI single as Moore scored. Albrecht and the Fighting Hawks defense secured a 1-2-3 inning to end the third with the 2-1win.
In the fourth inning, UND added to their lead as Peters tripled to right field.
Izzy Haslett stepped up and flied out, which allowed Peters to score to make it 3-1. The Tommies were unable to respond as North Dakota continued to lead heading into the fifth.
Neither team was able to score in the fifth and sixth, but in the top of the seventh, UND added two more runs.
Alyssa Rios singled through the left side to place her on the diamond, but
Kaycee Hayes stepped into pinch run for Rios. Moore singled yet again to advance Hayes into scoring position.
Jocelyn Kirk hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Moore to second and Hayes to third.
Chevelle Sartin stepped up and doubled down the line to earn an RBI double as Moore and Hayes scored to make it 5-1. The Tommies tried to rally and scored twice, but they were unable to come back as UND won 5-3.
The Fighting Hawks will return to action on Wednesday at Apollo Sports Complex in Grand Forks against Mayville State. The doubleheader will begin at 3 PM.
