TULSA, Okla. – Elise Ulseth (javelin),
Nelson Ruto (10,000 meters) and
Natalie Mohring (weight throw) all earned medals and gained All-Summit League honors on the opening day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships at the ONEOK Sports Complex on Thursday. Including the three that reached the podium, a total of six Hawks placed and scored points on day one of the three-day event.
Through three scored events each, the UND women sit third with 18 points, while the NoDak men are fourth with 12 points.
Ulseth reached the podium in the javelin, earning the silver medal with a throw of 151-3 (46.11m). With the runner-up finish, Ulseth earned All-Summit League accolades and was the top finisher for UND on the day.
Ruto was the first Hawk to be named All-Summit League on Thursday, finishing third in the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:38.98. Ruto's finish scored the first six points for the North Dakota men and was also a one-spot improvement from where he was projected to place at the conference meet.
Later in the afternoon, Mohring became the second Fighting Hawk to finish with all-conference honors, placing third in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 184-6 (56.23m) on her final throw. Mohring's throw now ranks No. 7 in program history and added six points for the UND women.
McKenzie Burian was the first Fighting Hawk to take the track, posting a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:54.76. That finish recorded the first four points of the meet for North Dakota and was the first 10,000 meters of Burian's career.
Patrick Kipkemboi joined Ruto in the second event of the meet and placed sixth in the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:57.98, netting three of North Dakota's nine points from that race alone.
Andrew Walter was the final Hawk to score points on day one, taking sixth in the javelin with a distance of 173-5 (52.87m).
After four events of the heptathlon,
Brooklynn Gould holds the top spot with 3,076 points.
Erica Benson trails Gould by 30 points and is second, while
Elle Thorson sits sixth with 2,943 points.
Gould posted two UND top-10 marks in the heptathlon and finished with three personal-bests on the day. Gould opened the day in the 100-meter hurdles and finished in a PR of 14.71 to move up to No. 6 in school history in that event, and finished the afternoon in the 200 meters in a personal-best time of 25.00, good for the No. 6 time in program history. The Alaskan native also claimed the top spot in the shot put, obliterating her previous best of 34-4 (10.46m) with a PR toss of 40-8 1/4 (12.40m).
Benson's best performance in the heptathlon on day one came in the high jump, finishing with the top spot at 5-6 (1.68m). Benson also put down the second-best heptathlon shot put mark of the afternoon with a throw of 37-3 3/4 (11.37m).
Thorson threw down personal-bests in two of the first four heptathlon events, recording PR's in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.99) and 200-meter dash (25.69). Thorson was second in the heptathlon high jump with a clearance of 5-2 1/2 (1.59m).
At the midway point of the decathlon, two Hawks are within scoring distance.
Ben Hidani is the top Hawk and is fifth with 3,368 points, while
Aric David is in eighth with 3,283 points.
Hidani recorded PR's in all five of the decathlon events. His most impressive personal-best came in the high jump, bettering his previous best of 5-5 3/4 (1.67m) with a clearance of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m). Along with his PR in the high jump, Hidani also recorded the fifth-best heptathlon marks of the day in the 100 meters (11.24), shot put (37-8, 11.48m) and 400 meters (53.13).
David finished with personal bests in the long jump (21-6, 6.55m), high jump (5-11 1/4, 1.81m) and 400 meters (51.74). David's top heptathlon event finish came in the 400 meters, good for the fourth-best 400-meter time of the day.
The Fighting Hawks will resume competition at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on Friday. Combined events commence the meet at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively, followed by field events at 2 p.m. and action on the track at 4:30 p.m. Live results will continue to be provided by
