KALAMAZOO, Mich. – North Dakota fell to Wright State 3-0 and beat Indiana State 3-0 in the first day of the Western Michigan tournament on Friday.
North Dakota had a slow in the opening set of the morning as Wright State took an early 6-0 lead, but the Fighting Hawks stopped the run with a kill from
Maddy Hornyak followed by an ace from
Peyton Sewell. As the first set continued, the Raiders extended their lead and took the initial set 25-17. Both teams ended the set 31 total attacks. WSU had 13 kills compared to UND's eight and committed only three errors while the Hawks had six. UND fought hard in the second set and kept it tight but fell 25-22. The Fighting Hawks added nine kills while the Raiders added 12 heading into the third set. Coming off a strong second set, North Dakota struggled to keep the momentum and fell 25-14 to give Wright State the 3-0 victory. UND earned a game-high 11 kills in the final set for a total of 28 in the match. The Hawks kept up the pace defensively as they tallied 42 digs compared to the 44 digs by the Raiders.
In the second match of the day, the Fighting Hawks and Sycamores traded the lead. Indiana State pulled away 17-12 midway through the match and kept the lead for a while. UND was down 23-20, but they went on a 5-0 run to win the first set 25-23. North Dakota had 17 kills on 51 total attacks in compared to Indiana State's 12 kills and 45 total attacks. In the second set, UND maintained the momentum as they led most of the set and took it 25-18. They added 13 kills while ISU added 11. In the final set, the Fighting Hawks trailed early but caught up to the Sycamores (15-15) before taking the lead. ISU battled and took the lead at 21-20, but North Dakota had six straight points to earn the 25-21 win.
The Hawks end the Western Michigan tournament by facing the host, Western Michigan, on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 9 a.m. CT.

- The defense was led by Elizabeth Norris and Kortney Carney as they both had 12 digs against the Sycamores.
- This is UND's first sweep of the season. The last time the Fighting Hawks beat a team in three sets was against South Carolina State on Sept. 14, 2019.
