MACOMB, Ill. – North Dakota volleyball started the conference season with a 3-1 victory over Western Illinois on Thursday evening from Macomb.
North Dakota had a slow start to the match as Western Illinois took an early 15-6 lead in the first set. The Fighting Hawks tried to catch up to the Leathernecks, but they were only able to score two points before WIU went on a five-point run to place them up 21-8. UND was unable to catch WIU as they took the first set 25-16. North Dakota stepped out ready in the second set as they quickly flipped the table and took the 10-4 lead. The Leathernecks kept attacking the Fighting Hawks defense, but they were unable to surpass them as they dropped the set 25-17. UND carried the momentum into the third set as scored the first five points to take the lead early. Western Illinois continued to struggle offensively as North Dakota extended their lead to 11-2 before the Leathernecks cut the deficit to four (11-7). Although WIU kept fighting to take the lead, UND took the fourth set 25-16. In the final set, the teams kept it close as they fought to take the lead. WIU took a one-point lead at 13-12 before UND scored three in a row to make it 15-13. Once the Fighting Hawks took the lead, they did not look back as they won 25-22 for a 3-1 victory.
The Fighting Hawks beat the Leathernecks statistically across the board. North Dakota had 67 points, 52 kills, six aces, nine blocks, 44 assists and 58 digs compared to Western Illinois who had 54 points, 46 kills, three aces, five blocks, 40 assists and 54 digs.
The Fighting Hawks continue Summit League play on the road against St. Thomas on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. CT.
Postgame Notes
- North Dakota improves to 4-8 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
- The 3-1 win against the Leathernecks ends a four-game losing streak against them. The last victory over WIU was on Nov. 1, 2019 in Macomb.
- This win also marks the end of a 28-game losing streak in Summit League play and the first conference win since Feb. 1, 2020 when they Fighting Hawks beat Oral Roberts 3-2 in Tulsa.
- Leading the Fighting Hawks in kills was Ashlyn Olson with 11. She ended the night with 11.5 points, two digs and a block.
- Marissa Stockman led North Dakota in points with 12.5 as she had nine kills, six blocks and a dig.
- Sierra Ward added nine kills, three blocks, two digs and an assist to end the night with 10.5 points.
- Sophia Ortquist reached a career-high in kills with nine against WIU. She had two blocks to end the evening with ten points.
- Elizabeth Norris facilitated the offense and defense with a double-double as she had 19 assists and 15 digs to lead UND against WIU. On top of those efforts, she had seven kills, three blocks and nine points.
- Paige Barber matched her career-high in kills with seven against the Leathernecks. She had one block to end the night with 7.5 points.
- Izzy McCormick contributed to the defense with 14 digs. She had one service ace to end with one point.
- Kortney Carney and Peyton Sewell each added ten digs defensively. Sewell had 14 assists to end the night with a point. Carney had six assists and three service aces for three points.
