BOZEMAN, Mont. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team capped off a perfect weekend with a 5-2 victory at Montana State on Sunday morning from Bozeman, Mont.
With the victory, UND (2-0) has swept the Montana schools for the first time in program history and captured road triumphs at both programs for the first time as well.
"We played with energy, supported each other, and overall were relentless competitors all weekend long," said UND associate head coach Kyle Anderson. "Both Montana and Montana State were nationally ranked at some point last year, so I am very happy for our guys to get rewarded for how they played."
In a similar start to yesterday, the Fighting Hawks dominated doubles play to get out to the early 1-0 lead.
Nikita Snezhko and
Gerhard Sullwald started it out on the top court with a 6-4 win before
Cian McDonnell and
Edmond Aynedjian sealed the two-man point with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 position.
Riley Odell and
Drew Van Fossen capped off the perfect start by another 6-3 score on the third court for their second win of the season.
Battling through the elevation change, Sullwald made it a 4-for-4 weekend in doubles and singles play on the top court, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 victory on the No. 1 court in singles action to stretch the North Dakota lead to 2-0 before Aynedjian pushed the match to its brink with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the third spot to give the Fighting Hawks a 3-0 advantage.
After suffering a tough, 4-3 defeat last season to the Bobcats (0-1), Snezhko put no doubt in this season's matchup, clinching the win by a pair of 6-4 scores on the No. 4 court.
Petro Alex put the finishing touches on the day at the bottom spot with a 6-2, 6-0 victory to secure the 5-2 UND win.
"Montana State beat us on our home courts last year, so it felt good coming into their house and getting the win," said Anderson.
North Dakota will take a trip out to the Empire State next weekend for a trio of matches beginning on Saturday against Army at 8 a.m. from West Point.
