FARGO, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against in-state rival North Dakota State on Sunday afternoon from Dacotah Field in Fargo, N.D.
With the result, the Fighting Hawks improve to 0-3-2 in Summit League action to remain in the hunt for a spot in the conference postseason. NoDak sits three points back of the sixth-and-final spot in the standings with three matches remaining in the regular season.
The pace was high playing on the turf, with both sides looking to stretch the field in the early going. UND had a few early chances to break the scoreless deadlock, including a try from distance by
Amelia Loeffler that was thwarted on a diving save from the NDSU goalkeeper.
The teams traded chances through a majority of the first half, but it was the visitors who really grabbed the momentum in the final moments of the opening stanza.
Milan Cordone got behind the defense and had an open look at goal, but was stopped on a great save from Abby Wilkinson in the 42nd minute. Moments later, the Hawks looked to get on the board on a goal from
Sofia Desirello, but the play was ruled offside to send the game into the halftime break tied at 0-0.
Coming out of the intermission, UND again had a chance to move ahead on another Cordone shot, but she was denied again. As the half wore on, however, it was North Dakota State who started to gain some momentum and generate some chances.
Madi Livingston made back-to-back stops near the 70th minute, including a diving save to her right to just get her hand on a ball rolling towards the net to thwart the best chance of the night for the Bison.
UND had a final couple of looks in the dying minutes, including a corner kick, but could not connect as the contest ended in a 0-0 tie.
North Dakota returns home to play Oral Roberts on Friday afternoon from Bronson Field at 1 p.m. in Grand Forks.
