GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota women's basketball team fell 75-68 to Mayville State Friday night in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
An early 7-0 run put the Fighting Hawks up by two points just three minutes into the game. However, after the lead changed hands two more times, the Comets scored 10 straight to take an 18-9 edge. A pair of free throws from
Nevaeh Ferrara Horne closed out the first period with the Hawks trailing 22-14. The Hawks offense couldn't find their rhythm in the opening period, as they were held to a .294 shooting percentage. Mayville State hit three triples and went five-for-five from the charity stripe in the opening quarter.
Kacie Borowicz led the Hawks in scoring for the sixth time this season with 16 points and had a team high eight rebounds. She also tallied four steals and dished out a season high seven assists.
Fatima Ibrahim had a career night with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting in 15 minutes off the bench. Ibrahim matched her single-game high of five rebounds, with three off the offensive glass.
Mayville State led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks began to chip away late at the Comet lead. Four straight points from
Nevaeh Ferrara Horne capped a 7-0 run to pull NoDak within three points with 56 seconds remaining. However, the Hawks were unable to knock down a three-pointer in the final minute of play, while the Comets went 4-for-6 from the free throw line to close out the win.
Ibrahim added a spark for the NoDak offense in the third quarter, scoring six points on 3-of-4 shooting. She pulled down five rebounds, including three of UND's six offensive rebounds in the period. Mayville State, however, would outscore UND by two points in the third to take a 57-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
Borowicz paced the Hawks in the second quarter, scoring seven points to bring her first half total up to 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting. A Ferrara Horne bucket started a seven-point swing in favor of the Hawks, cutting the Comet lead to 33-30 after a Borowicz three-pointer. The Comets answered with a triple of their own to close out the half with a 36-30 lead.
North Dakota returns to the Betty next Thursday for a noon matchup with Drake.
