Drake defeats North Dakota, 108-68

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota women's basketball team dropped a nonconference game to Drake, 108-60, Thursday in the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

The Bulldogs set the pace right off the opening tip, knocking down their first of 14 three-pointers just six seconds into the game. Nevaeh Ferrara Horne opened the scoring for the Fighting Hawks, but the Bulldogs would race out to a 16-4 lead three and a half minutes into the first quarter. Back-to-back triples from Kacie Borowicz and Kiyah Hurst pulled the Hawks within six late in the period, but the Bulldogs would knock down a pair of treys to close the first with a 31-23 lead.

UND shot .529 percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes, which was their best start from the floor in a first quarter this season. However, the Bulldogs were red-hot to start with a .632 shooting percentage with seven three-pointers. Borowicz poured in 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with two treys.

The Hawks offense fell in a rut in the second quarter, as they shot 3-of-20 from the field to trail 51-34 at halftime. UND had second chance opportunities with five offensive rebounds but would score just two points off the extra possessions. Drake attempted just 10 shots in the second quarter but made the most out of their trips to the charity stripe by connecting on all 10 free throw attempts. The Hawks cut the Drake lead to five points, 28-33, following two free throws from Jayla Owen, but the Bulldogs built their lead back to double-digits following an 8-0 run.

Looking to build momentum out of the intermission, Borowicz buried a three-pointer in the opening possession, but the Bulldogs answered with nine straight points to push their advantage back to double-digits. Drake held the Hawks at distance throughout the second half and took their largest lead of the night, 106-58, with 2:55 left in the fourth quarter.

North Dakota begins Summit League play next Friday in St. Paul, Minn. against St. Thomas.
