NOTES: Fighting Hawks Travel to Lincoln Wednesday for Second Big Ten Game of Season

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The North Dakota men's basketball team concludes its final road trip of the nonconference slate this week, heading to Nebraska for a matchup with the Cornhuskers. It will be the first meeting between the two since 2019, which was a 75-74 nail-biter the Fighting Hawks won in Lincoln.

North Dakota concludes this year's nonconference slate with a game in Lincoln, Neb. against the Cornhuskers.

 

Series History vs. the Cornhuskers

The two teams have met five times before, with the most recent meeting coming in 2019. The Fighting Hawks won 75-74 in Lincoln that night on a free throw from De'Sean Allen-Eikens with seven seconds left. Marlon Stewart led UND with 23 points that night and Filip Rebraca had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. NoDak also won the first meeting between the teams in 1933.  

 

Scouting the Opponent

The Cornhuskers are led by coach Fred Hoiberg, who has held the position since 2019. He played in the NBA for 11 seasons with the Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves. He has been a head coach for over a decade, starting at Iowa State in 2010 and was also the coach of the Bulls before coming to Nebraska.

The team is averaging 75.9 points per game, and allowing 64.9. From the floor the Huskers are shooting .435 and .330 from three point range. Juwan Gary leads the team with 14.5 points per game, and is one of four players averaging in double-figures. Rienk Mast leads the team with 9.9 rebounds per game, which is top 30 nationally; and leads the team with 33 assists.

 

Living Downtown

Last season the team broke the program record for three pointers made in a single game with 18 against Kansas City, breaking the record set on December 14, 2021 against North Central University.

North Dakota has hit at least one triple in every game dating back to Mar. 1, 2018. The last time the Hawks did not make a three came on Feb. 24, 2018, when UND went 0-for-8 from downtown at Northern Colorado in a 79-66 loss. North Dakota has hit at least one three in each of the last 169 games played.

Hot Start

The Fighting Hawks are off to an 8-4 start to the season, which is the best start through a dozen games in the Division I era. In the final season at the Division II level, UND started 9-3 (2007-08).

 

Last Season

North Dakota finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 13-20 record, a seven win improvement over 2021-22. The Fighting Hawks won their first Summit League Tournament game in three years with an 83-68 win over Denver in the first game of the tournament. The team won six of their last nine games, regular and postseason, last year.
