ORLANDO, Fla. – The North Dakota Softball team concluded their weekend in the Sunshine State by taking on tournament hosts Central Florida Sunday morning and fell to the Knights 9-1. The first run of the game came off the bat of Madison Pederson, but UND was unable to hold off the Knights who struck for nine unanswered runs. Jackie Albrecht took the loss for UND while Kaitlyn Felton got the win for UCF.
In the top of the first, Cassie Castaneda made great contact on a ball that looked like it was going over the fence but dropped at the warning track and rolled to the wall. She cruised into second and then Pederson followed and slapped a single opposite field into right and it brought Castaneda in to score.
UND was down 7-1 in the top of the third, and had a chance to get back in the game with the bases loaded. With two outs Izzy Haslett singled to the pitcher and beat out the play, then Castaneda followed with a single and then Pederson was hit by pitch. Mariah Peters followed with a ball into the outfield but a great defensive play from UCF kept the Fighting Hawks from getting back on the board.
Makaela Carr came in in relief for UND, she pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the third and then got out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth; but the UCF bats got the decisive run in the bottom of the fifth to finish the game.
