SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The North Dakota track and field teams resumed competition in California on Saturday, competing at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Invitational. At the meet, the Fighting Hawks claimed two event titles, had seven top-three finishes and put four marks on the UND top-10 list.
Austin Wolf tied his personal-best in the high jump with a clearance of 6-11 (2.11m) and came away with the event win.
The UND throwers picked up where they left off at the Redlands Invitational and placed eight times at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Invitational.
Natalie Mohring earned her third event win of the weekend, picking up the discus title with a throw of 158-8 (43.87m).
Kenna Curry was the runner-up with a PR toss of 157-0 (47.85m), good for the No. 8 throw in school history.
Eve Goldstein finished sixth with a mark of 137-0 (42.02m).
Earlier in the meet,
Allison Lardy was the top Hawk in the shot put, finishing as the runner-up with a throw of 46-6 1/4 (14.18m). Curry and Goldstein also threw in the event and were fourth (44-11, 13.69m) and fifth (44-6 3/4, 13.58m), respectively.
Later in the afternoon, Goldstein claimed third place in the hammer throw with a PR toss of 158-3 (48.23m). Lardy was also in the hammer throw and finished fifth with a distance of 152-10 (46.58m).
Malene Kollberg paced UND in the long jump and was the runner-up with a leap of 18-8 (5.69m), good for the No. 7 jump in school history.
Elle Thorson was fifth with a mark of 17-0 3/4 (5.20m), while
Claire Leach posted a PR of 17-0 (5.18m) to take sixth.
In the opposite section of the long jump,
Maguire Petersen earned the bronze with a jump of 22-3 3/4 (6.80m).
On the track, the women's 4x100-meter relay team of
Jerzie Finstad,
Hinewai Knowles,
Mackenzie Severson and
Carley Johnson recorded a PR time of 48.10 to finish fifth. That time moved the squad from No. 5 on the UND top-10 list to No. 3 in school history.
Towards the end of the meet, Finstad competed in the 200 meters and put down a PR time of 25.18, good for the No. 10 time in program history.
In the men's 4x100-meter relay, the team of
Josh Beck,
Alex Kaffine,
Jory Vasek and
Cruz Megazzini took sixth with a time of 44.76.
Knowles claimed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.63.
Jory Vasek was sixth in the 400 meters in 49.43.
Back in the field events,
Claire Leach placed sixth in the triple jump with a PR leap of 36-6 1/4 (11.13m).
Trenton Hanseder had a personal-best throw of 174 (53.15m) in the javelin to take seventh, beating his previous best of 159-10 (48.72m).
Most of the North Dakota track and field programs will have next week off, while
Luke Labatte will compete at the Raleigh Relays on Thursday and Finstad will run in the FSU Relays on Friday. Following that, UND will split up for the Texas Relays (March 29-April 1), Mike Fanelli Track Classic (March 30 & 31) and the Stanford Invitational (March 31 & April 1).
