Mohring Shines in California, UND Picks Up Five Event Titles

REDLANDS, Calif. – In a meet that started on Friday and lasted until the wee morning hours of Saturday in North Dakota time, the UND track and field team posted five event wins and six new UND top-10 marks at the Redlands Invitational. Over 1,500 student-athletes, including North Dakota, took part in the meet.

Natalie Mohring and the Fighting Hawk throwers had the most impressive showing of the meet. Mohring set the tone early, winning the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 187-3 (57.07m). That throw improved her No. 7 mark on the UND top-10 list. Friday evening, she competed in the discus and won that event title with a mark of 149-6 (45.58m).

Towards the end of the meet, Allison Lardy won the shot put crown with a personal-best throw of 48-2 3/4 (14.70m), good for the No. 3 mark in program history. She also competed with Mohring in the hammer throw earlier in the meet and took fifth with a toss of 158-6 (48.32m).

Kenna Curry also showed out with the throwers, finishing as the runner-up in the hammer throw with a PR toss of 178-11 (54.54m). Just before midnight in the central time zone, Curry finished third in the shot put with the No. 8 throw in school history with a distance of 45-10 (13.97m). She was also fourth in the discus with a mark of 135-11 (41.43m).

Eve Goldstein was the runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 46-2 (14.07m). She was also third in the discus (137-0, 41.76m) and took sixth in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 157-7 (48.05m).

Austin Wolf finished as the runner-up in the men's high jump with a clearance of 6-6 3/4 (2.00m). In the women's section, Ashley Conneran placed fifth with a height of 5-1 (1.55m).

In the final hours of Friday in North Dakota, Malene Kollberg earned a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 110-0 (33.54m). Elle Thorson took fourth in the event with a mark of 105-3 (32.09m).

At around 1:15 a.m. in North Dakota, Claire Leach placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 33-10 3/4 (10.33m).

Earlier at the meet, Jerzie Finstad claimed the first event win on the track for UND, winning the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 56.52. That time moved her into the UND top-10 list at No. 8.

Hinewai Knowles won the 100-meter hurdles title with a time of 14.47, good for the No. 4 spot on the UND top-10 list. She was trailed by Kollberg, who finished as the runner-up in 14.95. Mackenzie Severson and Thorson also competed in the event and were fifth (15.18) and eighth (15.43), respectively. Thorson's 100-meter time of 15.43 was a new personal-best. She would also later place eighth in the 200 meters in a time of 26.03.

Later in the 400-meter hurdles, Severson claimed third with a time of 1:07.22. In the following section, Jory Vasek finished seventh in a time of 57.10.

Maguire Petersen clocked a time of 16.03 in the 110-meter hurdles to place seventh, followed by Trenton Hanseder finishing eighth in a time of 16.06.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Finstad, Knowles, Severson and Carley Johnson were the first Fighting Hawks to compete on the track and they did not disappoint, finishing sixth with a time of 48.33. That time tied the fifth-fastest relay time in school history.

The Fighting Hawks will now make the 116 mile drive to Point Loma Nazarene University for the Ross and Sharon Irwin Invitational on Saturday. Competition will begin with field events starting at 11 a.m. (CT). The first events on the track will begin at 1:30 p.m. (CT). Live results for the meet will be available on Finished Results.
