TULSA, Okla. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team took down Kansas City, 4-1, in the semifinal round of the Summit League Women's Tennis Championships on Friday night from Tulsa, Okla.
With the win, UND advances to the championship for the first time in program history and will battle No. 44 Denver at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Fighting Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a strong performance in doubles play. The middle pair of
Nore Heinitz and
Jule Schulte cruised to a 6-0 victory before
Sapir Sela and
Andrea Jansson clinced the early start with a 6-3 win at the No. 1 court.
NoDak, who lost to Kansas City by a 6-1 score just two weeks ago, took control of the match at the beginning of singles play, grabbing victories in the first set on four of the six courts to put pressure on the Roos.
Heinitz showed why she earned All-Summit League Team honors by extending the lead to 2-0 with a pair of 6-1 scores from the No. 5 court while
Nyah Kauders pushed the match to its brink with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on the top court to make it 3-0 for the green and white.
After Kansas City got on the scoreboard following a win at the fourth spot,
Angela Georgieva clinched UND's spot in the title match with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph on the No. 6 court.
North Dakota will aim for an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. against No. 44 Denver.
