Curry Earns Bronze Medal on Opening Day of Conference Championships

FARGO, N.D. – Kenna Curry claimed the bronze medal in the hammer throw on the opening day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships at the Terry and Donna Dahl Track & Field Facility on Thursday. North Dakota had six Fighting Hawks place and recorded three improvements to the UND top-10 list on day one of the conference championships.

Curry medaled in the hammer throw, earning the bronze with a personal-best toss of 192-2 (58.57m). That throw not only earned her All-Summit League honors, but also moved her up to No. 4 in school history. Her throw currently sits No. 42 in the NCAA West Region.

Natalie Mohring joined Curry in the hammer throw and finished fourth with a mark of 188-6 (57.45m).

Later in the meet, Elise Ulseth placed seventh in the women's javelin with a throw of 127-7 (38.90m).

An hour later, Trenton Hanseder scored the first points for the Fighting Hawk men, taking sixth in the men's javelin with a personal-best mark of 179-5 (54.70m). His finish gave the North Dakota men their first three points of the meet.

In the first event on the track and final event of the day, Ellyssa Peterson and McKenzie Burian combined to score the final seven points of the evening for North Dakota. Peterson was fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:37.38, while Burian took seventh with a PR of 37:18.14. Burian's time ranks No. 10 in the event in program history.

Through four heptathlon events, Malene Kollberg and Elle Thorson are both inside the top-five, sitting third (3,056 points) and fourth (2,978 points), respectively.

Kollberg recorded personal bests in three of the four events, highlighted by the 100 meter hurdles, where she put down the No. 3 time in school history with a time of 14.16 for her first 956 points of the meet. In the following event, she tied for the top spot in the high jump with a PR clearance of 5-4 1/4 (1.63m). Her most productive event was the 200 meters, where she ran a time of 25.35 and added 835 points to her total.

Thorson had two personal bests and tied a PR in the four events. Her PR's came in the 100 meter hurdles (15.22) and shot put (35-2, 10.72m). Thorson's top event was the high jump, where she tied her personal best and tied for first in the event with a height of 5-4 1/4 (1.63m). She concluded the day in the 200 meters and put down a day-high 817 points with a time of 25.78.

At the midway point of the decathlon, all three Hawks are within scoring distance. Aric David is the top Hawk through five events with 3,289 points and sits eighth. Ben Hidani is currently 10th with 3,096 points and Garrett Syverson is 11th with 2,557 points.

David's most productive event was the long jump, where he scored a day-high 734 points and had the fifth-best mark of the event with a leap of 21-10 1/4 (6.66m). David also recorded a personal-best leap of 6-0 3/4 (1.85m) in the high jump to finish fifth in that decathlon event.

Hidani is 192 points behind eighth place going into day two. His most productive event was the 100 meters where he clocked a time of 11.31 for his first 793 points of the afternoon. In the long jump, Hidani had a personal-best leap of 21-6 3/4 (6.57m) for the seventh-best jump of the day, while he also was seventh in the shot put with a toss of 35-4 (10.77m).

Syverson opened the decathlon in the 100 meters and finished with a day-high point total of 578 points in that event with a time of 12.38. He also recorded a PR in the 400 meters with a time of 55.81.

The Fighting Hawks will resume competition at the Summit League Outdoor Championships on Friday. All events have been bumped up one hour from their previously scheduled time in an attempt to avoid thunderstorms with potential lightning on Friday night.
