Montana clips North Dakota, 1-0, in season opener

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The University of North Dakota soccer team opened up the regular season with a 1-0 defeat against Montana on Thursday afternoon from Bronson Field in Grand Forks, N.D.

Delaney Lou Schorr struck in the 58th minute to give the Griz (1-0) the tie-breaking goal and give the visitors their first win in Grand Forks since Oct. 11, 2013.

Madi Livingston was the story of the game in the first half, stopping all six shots fired her way. The Centennial, Colo., native finished the match with eight saves on nine attempts to notch her seventh appearance with one-or-fewer goals allowed over the last nine starts.

Montana nearly found the first strike of the game in the 10th minute, but Livingston made a great save of a tough chance from just inside the box to keep the game scoreless.

Livingston again kept the Griz off the board as the first half wore on, turning aside back-to-back chances right in front of the goal in the 21st minute, before UND started to find some offensive chances in the final moments of the half.

The Fighting Hawks tallied a trio of corners towards the dying minutes of the opening stanza but could not direct any chances towards goal to send the teams to the locker room tied at 0-0.

UND carried that momentum into the second half, collecting the first shot attempts of the contest just five minutes into the frame before Irene Jirasevijinda went for goal on a free kick in the 55th minute, but was denied by the keeper.

The Griz broke through just moments later; however, as Schorr finished off a strong cross with her head to finally beat Livingston and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

NoDak nearly knotted it up immediately, as Mary Gasaway had a great attempt at the back post following a corner kick, but Ashlyn Dvorak made her best save of the game in the 62nd minute to keep Montana in front.

The hosts forced Dvorak to make four saves in the second half, including a pair in the final 20 minutes, but the Griz held on for the 1-0 victory.

North Dakota returns to action on Sunday afternoon against Boise State at noon from Bronson Field. Fans can catch all the action on The Summit League Network.
