NOTES: Men's Basketball to Conclude Big Sky-Summit League Challenge in Flagstaff vs. Northern Arizona

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The North Dakota men's basketball team goes to Flagstaff, Ariz. for the first time since 2017 to take on Northern Arizona as part of the Big Sky-Summit League challenge. Tip off will be at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday.

North Dakota plays its second game as part of the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge on Wednesday, taking on Northern Arizona for the first time since 2018; when the two were Big Sky opponents and played in Grand Forks.

 

Series History vs. the Lumberjacks

North Dakota holds a 6-4 lead in the series. The first meeting came in 2013 when UND joined the Big Sky, an 81-79 in Flagstaff for North Dakota. The most recent meeting was in 2018, an 86-81 overtime win for the Fighting Hawks in Grand Forks.

 

Scouting the Opponent

The Lumberjacks are led by coach Shane Burcar, who is in his fifth season leading the team. He made the jump to the college ranks after being a high school head coach for many years in Arizona.

The team is averaging 66.1 points per game, and allowing 76.9. From the floor the Lumberjacks are shooting .435 and .320 from three point range. Trenton McLaughlin leads the team with 15.1 points per game, joined in double figures by Oakland Fort with 10 even. Carson Basham leads the team with 5.1 rebounds per game. McLaughlin leads the team with 21 steals and Basham leads with 17 blocked shots.

 

Living Downtown

Last season the team broke the program record for three pointers made in a single game with 18 against Kansas City, breaking the record set on December 14, 2021 against North Central University.

North Dakota has hit at least one triple in every game dating back to Mar. 1, 2018. The last time the Hawks did not make a three came on Feb. 24, 2018, when UND went 0-for-8 from downtown at Northern Colorado in a 79-66 loss. North Dakota has hit at least one three in each of the last 173 games played.

Last Season

North Dakota finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 13-20 record, a seven win improvement over 2021-22. The Fighting Hawks won their first Summit League Tournament game in three years with an 83-68 win over Denver in the first game of the tournament. The team won six of their last nine games, regular and postseason, last year.
