GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Sophomore
Lauren Perugini registered her fifth double double of the season with 13 kills and 11 digs, classmate
Teagan Timperley followed suit with her second double double in a 20-assist and 14-dig effort and junior
Izzie McCormick led all Hawks with 23 digs. However, a big second-set victory coupled with a nearly completed rally in set three was not enough for North Dakota against in-state rival North Dakota State on Tuesday night inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center as the Hawks fell in four sets in Summit League action. The loss moves UND to 8-11 overall and 1-7 in conference play. The Bison improve to 8-9 with a .500 record through eight league matches.
Expected back-and-forth action broke out in the opening frame as the Hawks held an 11-10 advantage powered by four early kills from true freshman
Vanessa Imoh. A 4-0 run by the visitors led to a 14-11 deficit for UND, but terminations from Perugini and senior
Jarolin de los Santos Lugo and a pair of NDSU service errors pulled the host to within a point at the set one media. The Hawks used a kill by true freshman
Vanessa Washington to tie the match at 16, but a 5-1 Bison run led to a 21-17 NDSU lead. UND continued to fight using a service ace by McCormick and two kills from Perugini to cut the NDSU lead to 23-22 but was unable to close out the frame.
Set two proved to be all Hawks as a 4-1 run to start grew to a 10-4 advantage courtesy of back-to-back aces from Santos Lugo moments before a wild sequence saw the senior score with her back to the net on an out-of-system ball that was kept in play on effort touches by McCormick and Imoh. That play pushed UND out front 15-12 and the Hawks doubled up the Bison down the stretch to even the match. UND had its best attack effort of the match in that second set hitting .267.
Defense was on display in the third set. UND recorded 27 of its 76 digs in that frame in addition to five of its six total blocks. The two sides played to a 13-13 tie, before a 7-0 NDSU run broke open the frame as the visitors led 20-13 prompting a UND timeout.
Following the timeout, the Hawks responded as redshirt freshman
Olivia Edlund entered the rotation and immediately impacted with a termination. She then twice teamed up with Washington as the pair provided two combo denials to pull UND to within two of the NDSU advantage at 20-18. A kill from Washington brought the Hawks to 21-20 and then consecutive block assists by
Katy Riviere, first with Washington and then with Santos Lugo, pushed North Dakota out front 23-22. Another block assist from Riviere and Santos Lugo evened the match at 24, but the Bison managed to weather the 11-4 run to take the set 26-24.
NDSU used the set three momentum to build a 10-6 lead in set four which grew to 21-13. The two sides traded the final eight points of the match as the league's top serving team produced an ace on match point to close out the night.
The Hawks play host to Omaha on Thursday in the program's annual "Dig Pink" game. The Mavericks swept UND on September 26 in the Summit League opener for both teams. The season's second meeting between the two squads can be seen on the Summit League Network and live stats for the contest will be available at FightingHawks.com.
