SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of North Dakota track and field team earned 15 spots on the All-Summit League Team, with 11 student-athletes making the list, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. The 11 Fighting Hawks earned all-conference accolades by finishing in the top three in their respective events at the Summit League Indoor Championships last weekend.
Yonca Kutluk headlined the all-conference team for North Dakota, becoming a triple crown winner at the championships. She was a three-time All-Summit League performer at the meet and a gold medalist in the 3,000 meters, mile and 5,000 meters.
Kutluk, later named the Track Championship MVP at the meet, won the title in the 3,000 meters on Friday night with a time of 9:27.20, beating the rest of the field by over six seconds. She opened Saturday afternoon with the mile and was victorious with a personal-best time of 4:46.72. It was the closest race of the meet for Kutluk, with her having to outlast a surging Ella Byers (4:47.07) of South Dakota in the final 100 meters. With her mile time of 4:46.72, Kutluk not only won the title but also broke the mile school record of Becky Leppard, who set it at 4:49.35 at the NCAA Division II Championships in 2001. Kutluk completed the trifecta towards the end of the meet, winning the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:50.44 and crossed the finish line over five seconds faster than the rest of the competition.
Kenna Curry, who earned the title of Field Championship MVP, garnered All-Summit League status twice at the meet. On Friday, Curry won the gold medal in the weight throw with a toss of 69-2 (21.08m). It was the first Summit League indoor title of her career and she had to overcome adversity, as she did not have the top mark in the event until her fifth throw. She returned to the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility on Saturday and gained a silver medal in the shot put with a toss of 50-6 (15.39m). Her shot put throw tied her PR mark, which set the school record at the UND Open earlier this season.
Malene Kollberg, the 2023 Summit League pentathlon champion, won the gold medal and earned All-Summit League status for the second year in a row with a PR total of 3,904 points. With the win, she became the first Summit League champion in the pentathlon to go back-to-back since Sami Spenner of Omaha in 2013 and 2014. Kollberg's finish also improved her No. 2 point total on the UND top-10 list.
The 2023 and 2024 pentathlon champion led all pentathletes in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77 for her first 959 points of the day on Friday. She also tied for the second-best height in the high jump with a clearance of 5-5 1/4 (1.66m) for 806 points and added an additional 603 points in the shot put (36-5 3/4, 11.12m). With two events to go, Kollberg sat second on the leaderboard and moved up to the top spot after finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 18-9 3/4 (5.73m). She needed to finish within 16 seconds of the winner of the 800 meters to become victorious in the pentathlon and repeat as the champion. In the 800 meters, Kollberg ran the fourth-fastest time (2:23.96), while Nell Graham of North Dakota State had the fastest time (2:13.73).
Maguire Petersen earned All-Summit League status and won the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Summit League Indoor Championships with a PR total of 5,421 points. With the win, he became the first Summit League indoor champion in the heptathlon in UND history. He set PRs in five of the seven heptathlon events and recorded the top marks in the long jump (22-10 3/4, 6.98m), shot put (47-2 1/4, 14.38m) and high jump (6-6 1/4, 1.99m) on Friday, which allowed him to hold the top spot after the second event (long jump) and lead the rest of the way. In addition to the title, Petersen also broke the heptathlon school record of 5,339 points, which was set by Jack Vetsch at the 2021 Summit League Indoor Championships. Petersen's PR in the long jump currently sits No. 9 in school history.
Tiffanie Magnusson, the 2023 runner-up in the pentathlon, earned All-Summit League honors for the second season in a row and another silver medal in the pentathlon with a personal-best total of 3,862 points. Her point total improved her No. 3 mark on the UND top-10 list. Magnusson had the top mark in the long jump with a leap of 19-4 3/4 (5.91m). She finished strong in the 800 meters and recorded the second-fastest time on Friday with a PR of 2:21.60. Magnusson also had a PR throw in the shot put (36-2, 11.02m) and tied her personal-best clearance in the high jump with a height of 5-4 1/4 (1.63m).
Later in the meet, Magnusson earned her second All-Summit League accolade of the 2024 Summit League Indoor Championships, finishing with the silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 19-7 (5.97m).
