Fighting Hawks fall, 4-2, to South Dakota in Summit League Semifinals

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Third-seeded North Dakota fell just short to No. 2 seed South Dakota on Friday afternoon, dropping a 4-2 decision in the 2024 Summit League Tennis Championships semifinal round from Des Moines, Iowa.

UND has its season come to an end with a record of 10-13 and 3-3 in league play, eclipsing double digits in wins for the third straight year and advancing to the postseason for the fourth time in five tries since joining the Summit League.

South Dakota, who had only lost once against league foes in regular season play, jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a pair of victories on the No. 1 and 2 courts before extending the advantage to 2-0 in singles action from the third position.

Andrea Jansson got the Fighting Hawks on the board in her final match in the green and white, notching a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) triumph from the No. 2 court to pull UND within a point. After the Coyotes pushed the lead back to two, 3-1, Sapir Sela rallied back from a loss in the opening set with 6-2, 6-1 wins over the final two stanzas to trim the deficit down to 3-2.

With just two courts remaining and both heading to a decisive third set, NoDak needed to capture wins on both in order to advance; however, USD held on at the No. 6 position to clinch the overall match victory.
