GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Senior forward and team captain Riese Gaber has signed a multi-year deal with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Friday, as announced by the organization. Gaber will play the remainder of the 2023-24 season on an amateur tryout (ATO) before a two-year, one-way AHL deal begins next year.
Gaber concluded his career at North Dakota as one of the program's best in recent memory, tallying 64 goals and 65 assists for 129 points in 142 career games. The Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, native was a consistent scorer throughout his collegiate career, reaching the 10-goal mark in all four seasons, including three straight years of at least 15 tallies, and hitting the 30-point plateau in his final three campaigns.
He became the 87th member of the 100-point club at North Dakota during his senior season and his 129 career points finish in a tie for 43rd all-time in scoring at UND and seventh since the 2001-02 campaign.
Gaber helped the Fighting Hawks capture three Penrose Cups during his four seasons, including in 2023-24 while serving as the team captain. He also advanced to three national tournaments and helped NoDak become the first team in NCHC history to win both the regular season and tournament titles in the same year in 2020-21.
Off the ice, Gaber is a four-time member of the NCHC All-Academic Team while also earning NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete honors in his last three years.
The Checkers, who are the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers, are just one win away from clinching a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.
