GREEN BAY, Wisc. – Junior
Katy Riviere and freshman
Cala Cooper paced North Dakota's attack as each delivered 14 kills, graduate
Elizabeth Norris recorded a double-double, the Hawks produced a season-high 15 blocks and UND beat Chicago State in four sets at the Capital Credit Union Classic on Thursday evening inside the Kress Center. The Hawks bounced back from a set one defeat, rallied from a 23-18 deficit in set three and closed out set four on a 7-3 run to win their fourth straight and sixth in their last seven as third-year head coach
Jesse Tupac's squad improved to 6-3. The loss for the Cougars drops their overall record to 3-5.
The Hawks trailed for much of the opening set before erasing an 18-13 deficit by engineering a 10-4 run to grab a 23-22 lead. In that sequence, UND used kills from four different players including two from Cooper as well as an ace from sophomore
Lauren Perugini and blocks from junior
Paige Barber and senior
Jarolin de los Santos Lugo. The Hawks nearly completed the rally, but the Cougars closed on a 3-0 run behind two kills as CSU hit .265 in the frame.
North Dakota carried the momentum from its strong run at the end of set one into the second frame as the Hawks jumped out to a 14-6 lead with Cooper contributing three kills and a block and Santos Lugo providing two terminations and two denials. Moments later, Barber, who finished with ten kills, delivered a pair of put downs with the second starting a string of kills from five different players down the stretch as the Hawks evened the match with a 25-18 victory.
Set three saw the Cougars build leads of 5-1, 13-8, 18-13 and 23-17. Riviere delivered in the early going as a trio of kills kept the Hawks in step with the Cougars prior to their first five-point lead. However, CSU was unable to close out the frame as the Hawks took advantage of a service error and five Cougar attack errors. Two of those errors were the result of blocks as Santos Lugo teamed up with Cooper and Norris to pull the Hawks all the way back to a 24-24 tie. CSU again moved to set point, but Cooper killed to tie it at 25 and then used a solo block to reverse set point before a Cougar attack went long to cap off an 8-2 UND run to close the frame.
In the fourth, Riviere used a kill to tie the set at 4-4 and again at 13-13. Her fourth kill of the frame gave UND an 18-17 advantage before CSU tied the set at 20-20. The Hawks closed on a 7-3 run with aces from Santos Lugo and
Teagan Timperley and terminations from Cooper (2) and Barber highlighting the finish.
