UND holds off ISU late-game surge, 2-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – It took the entirety of the 90 minutes to find a victor, but North Dakota (3-2-2) held on to defeat Idaho State (1-3-1) at Bronson Field, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

The Fighting Hawks led 2-1 in the 89th minute of the contest, but the game came down to a penalty kick in the closing seconds. Mary Za was fouled in the box with a single second left on the clock, which gave the Bengals a chance to leave Grand Forks with a 2-2 tie.

On the penalty kick, Za aimed for the lower left corner of the net, which sent keeper Sydney Bakritzes diving to the left before the ball hit the post and allowed the final second to tick off the clock for the UND victory.

NoDak held a 2-0 lead until the 83rd minute, when Paige Harris booted in a score from 25 yards out to bring the tally to 2-1 and set up the chaotic final minutes of the contest.

UND had a 2-0 advantage prior to the late-game surge, scoring its first goal off a diving header from Charlie Basinet after a corner kick from Irene Jirasevijinda in the 49th minute. Jessica Machovec increased the lead to 2-0 in the 76th minute. Machovec's goal was set up when Kaylie Fowler stole the ball at midfield and raced down the sideline to find a sliding Morgan Huff in front of the goal, which kicked the ball to the foot of Machovec.

North Dakota ended the game with 10 shots and four shots on goal. Amy Loeffler was the top attacker with three shots and one shot on frame. Basinet, Machovec and Paula Moreno Diaz had the only other shots on goal for UND.

Idaho State recorded 25 shots, with eight of them being shots on goal. Peyton Dion led the Bengals with five scoring attempts and one shot on goal.

North Dakota will return to Bronson Field on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match with Jamestown. The game will air on the Summit League Network.
