No. 4/5 Western Michigan clips No. 14/16 UND, 3-2, in overtime

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Alex Bump struck for a pair of goals, including the game winner, to help No. 4/5 Western Michigan defeat No. 14/16 North Dakota, 3-2, in overtime on Friday night from a sold-out Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.

Bump struck just 14 seconds into the extra session, firing a shot through traffic and past the goaltender on the power play to hand the Fighting Hawks (12-9-1, 7-4-0 NCHC) their first loss in 3-on-3 overtime this season and snap a five-game unbeaten streak at home.

Forwards Carter Wilkie (4) and Dylan James (7) each struck for NoDak in the loss, while sophomore goaltender Hobie Hedquist finished with a career-high 31 saves but suffered his first home defeat of his career.

With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the third, UND jumped in front when Wilkie snapped home his fourth goal of the season, but Bump and the Broncos (14-4-1, 7-1-1 NCHC) answered just 40 seconds later to knot the contest back up at 2-2.

NoDak had another chance to take the lead late in regulation when James made a great drive to the net and drew a penalty with just over two minutes to play, but the Hawks were called for a minor penalty themselves just 24 seconds into the man advantage to even it up at 4-on-4.

WMU took advantage of its only power play of the night, as Bump tallied the game winner to move the Broncos one point ahead of UND in the conference standings.

North Dakota will try to earn a series split tomorrow night at 6:07 p.m. on Midco Sports, NCHC.tv and the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
