UND earns big road point with 2-2 draw at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of North Dakota soccer team grabbed a big road point on Thursday night, playing to a 2-2 draw against South Dakota State from Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, S.D.

The draw improves UND to 0-1-2 in league action with two points in the league standings while also marking the first result against South Dakota State (7-1-4, 1-0-1 Summit League) since joining the conference in 2018 (0-8-1) and the first in Brookings since 2002 (1-11-1).

In a back-and-forth affair, it was UND who struck first in the 40th minute when Jessica Machovec curled a ball that found the top corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Jackrabbits had a few quality chances of their own in the opening 45 minutes, but Grace Miller was up to the task with five saves to send NoDak to the break with a 1-0 advantage.

SDSU eventually leveled the contest with a goal in the 73rd minute, but the Fighting Hawks grabbed the lead right back off a set piece. Yui Fuji sent a dangerous corner into the box where it fell to the feet of Charlie Bassinet and the sophomore buried her sixth goal of the season to give UND a 2-1 advantage with just under 10 minutes to play.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Jacks answered back with an own goal just seconds later to bring the contest even at 2-2. Both teams had chances in the final minutes, but settled for the 2-2 draw.

North Dakota will close out the weekend at South Dakota at 1:00 p.m. on Summit League Network.
