MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of North Dakota women's tennis team opened up the weekend with a 4-3 win over Marquette on Friday afternoon from the Sprovieri Tennis Complex in Milwaukee, Wis.
UND improves to 6-2 on the season and 4-1 away from Grand Forks to match the program's best start in the Division I era (2008-09).
Nore Heinitz also clinched a major milestone in the victory, moving into second in program history behind only
Andrea Jansson with 119 all-time wins.
The Fighting Hawks got off to a strong start in doubles action, with the bottom pairing of
Alyssa Giupponi and
Andrea Pineda grabbing a 6-2 victory before the middle duo of Heinitz and
Jule Schulte grabbed the 1-0 lead for the visitors with a 7-5 triumph.
Heinitz kept it rolling in singles play, extending the lead to 2-0 with a pair of 6-2 wins on the No. 4 court, but Marquette rallied back with a victory from the second spot to get the hosts on the board and cut the lead to 2-1.
Pineda pushed the advantage back to a pair at 3-1 on the No. 1 court, grabbing back-to-back 7-6 victories to push the match to its brink. After the Golden Eagles won in three sets at the third spot, Giupponi provided the clinch on the bottom position with a 7-5, 6-2 win before the hosts grabbed a final point in three sets at the No. 5 spot to end the match at 4-3.
North Dakota will look to make it a weekend sweep on Saturday morning against Dayton at 11 a.m.
